Checklist for Cover Letter (Must Include)

checklist_hg_whtCover Letter is a job application sent to potential employer along with your resume. A cover letter is important because it will be designed on the basis of your knowledge about company and shows your desire to work for it. Most employers will want an organized cover letter to serve as supporter for your employment application and resume submission. Therefore the cover letter has equal importance like resume. Here you can find very interesting and basic checklist for evaluation of your cover letter before mailing it to prospective employer. When you have completed the first draft of your cover letter compare it with checklist which contains various items of contents & format and determine additional changes if needed.

Cover Letter Must “Contain”

  • Design cover letter on a single page because you are not writing about your life story and use same quality paper as you use for resume. If paper has poor quality or mismatch with resume then don’t send anything at all because this kind of mistakes tell the employer that professionalism is not one of your suits.
  • Be brief, professional and concrete and ensure that the contact name and company name in  letter is spelled correctly with his/her correct title because no one like her name to be misspelled.
  • Provide a view that you have conducted a research to know about company by including information about company on your cover letter.
  • You should include all relevant personal information like name, address, home phone, cell phone and email address correctly. Mention the position name you are applying for and where it was listed.
  • Use blue or black ink pen to sign your cover letter although it is an old standard but it is still working today.
  • Sell yourself. Beginning of every sentence with “I” is not appropriate way instead of it you can state in clear and well defined language how you can help employer in reaching the specific destinations and attaining specific goals.
  • Write your cover letter with font of 10-12 points and easy readable writing like Times New Roman or Arial.
  • Proofread. Proofread. Proofread for grammar spelling and typos errors because these mistakes are deadly.
  • Send original letter instead of copy because it is waist of time to send a copy to employer. It reflects your poor attitude and sends a clear signal to employers that you did not take care enough to create letter for them.
  • Highlight your key achievements, skills and past professional experiences and if you have gaps in employment history clearly mention it.
