Cover letter is a first step towards your bright future because it tells whole story about your skills, qualifications and achievements in comprehensive and concise manner. You should design it with proper care and attention. Here is a checklist for cover letter which contains those items which should not be included in cover letter at any cost.

  • Never extend your cover letter more than a single page in length.
  • Avoid grammatical, poor spelling, or typos mistakes and poor structured sentences to eliminate your employment chances.
  • Don’t be verbose and constitutional on-and-on.
  • Don’t use bombastic words that had no meaning and make core of your message aimless.
  • Avoid from addressing employer in general way; always use a specific person’s name.
  • Always send your cover letter and resume in response to employment add. Don’t send your resume and cover letter to hiring authorities without requirement.
  • If you are sending your cover letter in response of any add then always send one copy to human resource department and second copy directly to employment function management.
  • Don’t include too lengthy job description in cover letter because it can become boring and waste your important part of cover letter which can enhance your market value and key achievements.
  • Focus on your achievements and accomplishments instead of writing job descriptions in your cover letter.
  • Highlight your accomplishments by using bullets and appropriate spacing to make them stand out. Don’t hide them in the bottom of letter.

  • Be clear and concise, don’t over crowd text because it makes your cover letter difficult to read.
  • Don’t use restrictive language which suggests you geographically stubborn, especially when you are applying for lifetime opportunity.
  • Don’t include compensation requirements, instead of it try to screen you out from highly desirable opportunity of your interest and keep your options open.
  • Always send a well written resume as an attachment with cover letter.
  • Always use conventional business format and avoid using uncommon, strange letter format. You should avoid from fancy and decorative styles in letter are simple and professional.
  • Always use good quality paper. Don’t use lightweight or heavyweight papers and non exotic colors, stick to 20-24 pound bond.
  • Match you cover letter with this checklist to be sure that you have fulfilled all requirements. If your answer is “No” then go back and edit your cover letter to make it perfect before mailing it.
