Resume Format for Lawyers

Lawyers like other counselors also need to keep a copy of updated resume in any case either they want to find a new job or economy takes a down turn. Counselor resumes will follow a similar format like other professional resumes. Usually a counselor’s resume should contain specific information like educational experience, work history, volunteer experience, professional associations and contact information. Lawyer’s resumes must be formal and should follow traditional chronological resume format that starts with a professional profile followed by education and reverse chronological listing of applicant’s work experience.

If you are an experienced lawyer then you can focus on professional achievements and leadership roles at your previous firm. New law school graduates should focused on their academic performance and clerkships.

Educational History

It is a vital part of any resume because advocates spend a great deal of time as student and most employers want to see potential employee’s educational history. Commonly educational history should only contain undergraduate information and law school information. You should list your most recent education at top which can be law school education. You should include all relevant information including grade point average, class ranks and any honors received during school. If advocate recently gets graduation degree from law school then this information should included in first section of resume because it is most relevant information.

Professional History

Professional history is another key component of an advocate’s resume. Professional experience depends on how long advocate has been licensed to practice law and has been practicing so this section will vary. You can mention all work history with brief job description that can perfectly relevant to position you are applying for. For specification if advocate is seeking for position as a civil litigator but only has experience of a public defender then he/she can include information regarding trial experience in the section of work history. If advocate is fresh graduate from law school then resume should include all summary of work experience and analytical experience. If you have an extensive experience as an advocate then this should be included in top section of resume because it is most relevant.

Volunteer Experience

Advocates are encouraged to do work without compensation during practicing attorneys and if an attorney has any volunteer experience then you should list it on resume as an indicator as a type of free services in which attorneys can be interested. Various law firms are also interested in hiring of candidates for volunteer work. Volunteer work is a good indication that person is interested in work. You can include this information in the bottom of your resume.

Personal Associations

It is also important information to include in resume to show that you are also involved in legal community. There are various professional associations and you can belong to anyone association of your choice. You can also include this information in the bottom of your resume.

Contact Information

Contact information is a vital part of resume and usually this information will include name of advocate, address, phone number and email address. You can also include jurisdiction in which attorney is licensed to practice law and also give her identification or other numbers.
